"Ask & you shall receive." A simple invitation to attend the Family Intervention Services ("FIS")
breakfast by Debbi Tavares evolved into the Secret Pal program in support of children in the Kid
Connection. FIS was looking for community support and the TLC congregation responded with
warm, generous hearts and minds. Members were invited to be a "secret pal" to a child currently
in foster care or temporarily separated from their families for many reasons. The Secret Pals
reach out to their child by remembering them with cards & gifts throughout the year.
Occasionally, FIS has special needs that are passed along to the congregation and secret pals. Last
summer,TLC collected an offering to raise funds for some children to obtain the necessary
clothes and items to attend summer camp. Six young girls received sleeping bags from their
secret pals to allow them to camp out on a Massachusetts farm for a week. A young, needy
family had no washing machine to help with their five children, and withing a few days
members of tlc were able to get a used, working machine to the young mother. Some sponsors
have begun offering small cash allowances that have allowed some of the children to open their
own bank accounts.
There are currently 47 secret pals connected to a needy child within the nine counties
represented in Kid Connection. We are in need of about 13 more sponsors to cover all the
children that could use some family contact. Other individuals, churches and businesses have
started their own Secret Pal programs or asked to be a part of our efforts. If you would like to
sponsor a child in our Secret Pal program, you need NOT be a member of TLC. Debbi Tavares
may be contacted through the church office for further information.
